Workshops & Demonstrations Washtenaw County: Nichols Arboretum Site
This site is located in The University of Michigan's Nichols Arboretum on the Huron River in Ann Arbor. Fascines and live staking soil bioengineering practices were installed on a 200-foot section of the river.
The following photos show the site before site preparation and installation of soft engineering practices. Refer to the other links at left for additional pictures of the workshop and various facets of the demonstration project.
Photo 1 of 3 Looking downstream. In the 1970's broken concrete had been placed along the river bank to stabilize erosion. Over the years river flow washed out soil behind the concrete. Note the bank slough area on the right side of the picture above the concrete.
Photo 2 of 3 Looking upstream. River flow has undercut the bank and exposed tree roots.
Photo 3 of 3 Looking upstream. Heavy foot traffic has added to the bank erosion and instability problems (note roughness of bank).
